Bharadwaj

DRONA’s father and son of Vrihaspati. His other name was Vitath.

He was filled with lust when he saw Ghritachi having a bath. The semen from his ejaculation was stored in a pitcher. Drona, the first test-tube baby in the world, was born in that pitcher.

Vrihaspati forced himself on Mamata, the pregnant wife of Bharadwaj’s elder brother Utathya. The child in Mamata’s womb put out his leg and tried to stop his uncle. Vrihaspati’s semen fell on the ground. The child born from that semen was abandoned by Mamata and Vrihaspati. Marudgan reared that child.

He was fed by Marudgan and therefore he was called Bhar (to be fed); he was born of two strengths and therefore he was dwaj or half-breed—Bhar and dwaj together form the word Bharadwaj. He is mentioned in both the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. Rama and Sita visited his hermitage on their way to the forest and on their way back.
